Still Waiting to Return That ACH Entry? You May Not Have To.

With Nacha's Request for Comment on Return Efficiencies currently open for industry feedback (deadline June 26, see article above) a Nacha blog from last year is worth a fresh look.

The post debunks three common myths that may be slowing your returns down:

1. That same-day windows only apply to Same Day ACH entries
2. That the Same Day Entry Fee applies to returns
3. That RDFIs must wait until the original item's Settlement Date before transmitting a return.

None of these are true under the Nacha Operating Rules.

Those of us at Digital Directions 2026 may remember Nacha CEO Jane Larimer's keynote — when she asked the room who was using same-day windows for returns, only a handful of hands went up. The Nacha data backs that up, and the gap is exactly what the current RFC aims to address.
