How to protect kids from identity theft this back-to-school season

KNOE

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Back-to-school season is a popular time for families to post photos online. Before posting that photo with seemingly innocent information, though, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

The Better Business Bureau says back-to-school photos often feature children holding a “first day of school” sign with basic information like their name and grade.

However, those little details can pose a security risk to both adults and children.

Jo Ann Deal with the BBB says scammers could use simple information to try to commit identity theft. The information can also be used to breach password security and banking or credit card accounts.

People who steal a child’s identity may do it for multiple reasons.

Some of those reasons include applying for government benefits (like health care coverage or nutrition assistance), opening a bank or credit card account, applying for a loan, signing up for a utility service (like water or electricity), or renting a place to live.
